Songs About Cats (And Other Pets)
65
I had to put my beloved two year old tabby down recently. It sucked, pretty bad. It got me to thinking. There are some pretty bad ass songs about our pets. Few about cats unfortunately, but nonetheless, there are several pretty cool ditty's about house pets. So grab your furry companion and listen to the following pet inspired tunes!
"Stray Cat Strut" - Stray Cats
How much cooler can you possibly get, than with the help of the Stray Cats? This song makes dogs look like, well, pussies.
"What's New Pussycat?" - Tom Jones
Okay, so back in 1965, Welsh singing sensation, Tom Jones, wasn't exactly singing about a member of the feline family. Still a classic tune, nonetheless! And Tom was so delicious....
"I Love My Dog" - Cat Stevens
What's better than a song about a dog, by a...Cat--Stevens that is. It's a cute, sentimental homage to your average house pet, but not sure if singing "I love my dog, as much as I love you," is quite the compliment :P
"Martha, My Dear" - The Beatles
I bet you didn't know that the "silly girl" Paul McCartney was referring to in this track from the White Album was about his beloved sheepdog, did ya? He also once stated that it was him singing in reference to long time and former love, Jane Asher. Again, enough with comparing your dogs to your women. Seriously.
"Jet" - Paul McCartney & Wings
If you haven't noticed, McCartney enjoyed singing about his dogs. Yes the Wings classic, "Jet" is about a dog. See, you're learning a lot today aren't you? In 1976, McCartney began a successful run with his new band, Wings, alongside wife, Linda. It was always rumored to be about their golden lab, though several years later, McCartney himself said he actually owned a pony named "Jet" as a child. Whatever, Paul. Still, it's about an animal.
"Me and You, and A Dog Named Boo" - Lobo
In 1971, newly recognized singer-songwriter, Lobo came to us with a classic soft rock song about reminiscing. It was a number one for the artist. However, Boo didn't live to see it's success. He died after being forced to listen to it.
"Old Shep" - Elvis Presley
Ah, when I was a young lad, uh, lass, I heard this song for the first time. IT IS SOOO SAD. Just a wonderful story about a boy and his dog. You can't get it any better than this:
Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home
Sometimes, even a King has got to sing about a dog.
"Ben" - Michael Jackson
Now here's a ringer for ya. A song about a rat. It's not every day you hear a song about a rat. But only a movie about a rat, could have a theme song about a rat. Come a ten year old Michael Jackson to the rescue. It's so sad, because everyone knows what happens to Ben in the movie. Poor Ben....who names a rat, Ben?

Great to see the Stray Cats. That's a cool video and a live performance by Tom Jones is great. I'm surprized, you didn't include The Cure's Love Cat, it's a good video, too. There was an underground band in the mid-2000s called Men in Fur (I think they were from Atlanta); all their songs were about animals, it was their theme, so to speak. Thanks.
Sorry to hear about your cat,i know how badly that sucks. Loved all the music videos and music facts !

Great list! My favorite songs about Cats and other pets is "Wild Packs Of Family Dogs" - Modest Mouse, "Mean Eyed Cat" - Johnny Cash, "Cat City" - White Denim, "Plea From A Cat Named Virtue" - The Weakerthans, "Pets" - Porno For Pyros.

So sorry to hear about your dear darling cat.
This is a fun list. I can think of more cat song "The Year of the Cat" and "The Cat Came Back." There is also a comic opera duet called "Duetto Buffo" where the only lyric is "meow."
